Product Content Audit for Industrial Catalogs

A seven-dimension checklist for scoring industrial catalogs across identity, classification, schema, completeness, consistency, provenance, and activation.

A useful industrial content audit does not start with description length or image count. It asks whether the product record is complete enough to power search, filters, procurement workflows, comparison, AI discovery, and compliance review.

Dimension What is assessed Score signal
Product identity GTIN, MPN, brand, internal IDs, supplier IDs, lifecycle status, and duplicate resolution. Can the same real product be recognized across suppliers and systems?
Classification Category coverage and classification confidence. Is every product in a useful category with a known confidence level?
Attribute schema Whether every category has defined technical fields. Does the category specify the attributes buyers and systems need?
Completeness Coverage of category-critical attributes. Are required specs populated, not merely optional marketing fields?
Consistency Units, formats, controlled values, and terminology. Can filters compare values without unit or naming cleanup?
Provenance Whether values can be traced to documents or systems. Can a user see where a value came from and when it changed?
Activation Readiness for search, filters, feeds, comparison, procurement, and AI. Can the data be used downstream without manual interpretation?

How to run the audit

Start with a representative category, not the whole catalog. Pull a sample of high-volume, high-margin, and high-support-load products. For each dimension, score the record from 0 to 3: absent, inconsistent, partially reliable, or operationally ready. Then separate cosmetic gaps from structural gaps. A missing lifestyle image is cosmetic. A missing pressure rating on a pressure component is structural.

What the score reveals

The output should show where the catalog blocks revenue and operations: products buyers cannot find, filters that cannot be trusted, duplicate supplier records, values that lack evidence, and categories without a schema. That is much more actionable than a generic checklist about better descriptions.
