Safety footwear product attributes
Safety footwear attributes for catalog records: toe cap material, the ASTM F2413 marking decomposed into flags, electrical hazard, size, width and height.
Safety footwear data is dense because a single boot carries several independent protections. The ASTM F2413 marking packs the standard edition, the impact and compression ratings, and optional protections such as metatarsal, electrical hazard and puncture resistance into one short string. Supplier files often reduce it to "meets ASTM" or drop the optional codes, which are the parts a safety program actually specifies.
Variant structure adds its own traps. One style number can span dozens of length and width combinations, each with its own UPC, while toe cap material, waterproofing and insulation weight may change between otherwise identical models. Width codes differ between men's and women's sizing, and terms like "comp toe" and "non-metallic" are used loosely, so the toe cap material needs a controlled value.
A buyer needs to confirm the toe protection and the protective flags their site requires, then size, width, height and any insulation or waterproofing needs. Storing the verbatim marking from the label alongside decomposed fields for each protection lets the catalog filter accurately while preserving the original evidence.
The safety footwear attribute template
18 candidate fields in 4 groups, ordered the way a record gets built: identify the item, capture its specifications, then record fit and the evidence behind any claim. 7 are marked Core: without them the item cannot be identified or filtered. Example values show the expected format only; they do not describe a real SKU.
Identity
Which exact item, variant and pack this record describes.
Check before use: Preserve leading zeros and punctuation, validate against the manufacturer record, and check the GTIN check digit and packaging level before linking.
| Attribute | Type | Priority | Example format |
|---|---|---|---|
Manufacturer Part Number manufacturer_part_number | Identifier | Core | SB-6420-CT |

Technical specifications
Measured or rated values that must travel with their unit and test conditions.
Check before use: Store the number and unit separately. Convert only when the source unit and test conditions are known.

Selection attributes
The type, material and option choices buyers filter and compare on.
Check before use: Map supplier wording to a governed vocabulary only after checking the source text and which variant it applies to.

Evidence & compliance
Listings, standards, classifications and origin claims that need a document behind them.
Check before use: Link the manufacturer document or label with its edition or date. Never copy a certification from a neighboring SKU.

Normalize supplier values
The same value arrives in many spellings. Map each raw string to one governed value, and keep the raw text beside it so a reviewer can see what the supplier actually wrote.

Often missing from supplier files
These fields are commonly absent from price lists and basic feeds, even though the information usually exists in a datasheet, label or installation manual. Treat an empty value as a request for evidence, not as permission to fill it from a similar model.

Questions the record must answer
Buyers and counter-sales reps choosing safety footwear ask questions like these. Each one needs a specific field, sourced for the exact variant.
- Is this boot rated for electrical hazard work, and does it have a metatarsal guard?
- Do you carry this style in size 11 wide?
- Will this boot set off a metal detector at a secure site?
- Is this boot insulated enough for a cold storage warehouse?
From supplier file to record
- Resolve identity first. Link the supplier SKU, manufacturer part number and packaging identifiers without merging distinct variants or pack sizes.
- Extract with the source attached. Pull values from rows, tables and datasheets, keeping the raw text, unit and page or row reference.
- Map to your classification. Assign the ETIM, ECLASS, UNSPSC or internal class your company licenses, and keep the supplier's original terms.
- Review, sync and watch. Hold conflicts and safety-related values for a category expert, write approved values to ERP or PIM, and recheck when the supplier sends a new file.

FAQ
How do ASTM F2412, F2413 and F2892 relate to each other?
ASTM F2412 describes the test methods for foot protection. ASTM F2413 sets the performance requirements for protective toe cap footwear and defines the marking. ASTM F2892 covers soft-toe footwear that offers protections such as electrical hazard resistance without a protective toe cap. A record should name the requirements standard the product is marked to, usually F2413 or F2892, and treat F2412 as the test reference rather than a claim. Take the standard from the label or manufacturer documentation.
Is the ASTM edition year worth storing separately?
Yes. The edition sits at the start of the marking (for example F2413-18), and some specifications and contracts require a particular edition or later. Storing it as its own field lets you filter and audit without parsing strings, and it makes clear when a supplier's documentation refers to an older edition than the label on current stock. Keep the verbatim marking as evidence, and populate the edition, impact rating, compression rating and each optional protection as separate fields.
How should length and width be modeled?
Treat the style as the parent and each length and width combination as a child SKU with its own part number and GTIN. Store length and width as two controlled attributes rather than one combined size string, and normalize width codes to a governed list (for example D and EE for men's medium and wide). Record whether the size is men's or women's, because the same width letter means a different fit on each scale.
Do CSA-certified boots need a steel toe?
No. CSA Z195 evaluates toe protection by performance rather than by material, so composite and other non-metallic toe caps can be certified. The CSA marking on the boot indicates which protections apply. Record the CSA claim separately from the ASTM claim, because a boot certified to one standard is not automatically certified to the other. Confirm Canadian claims against the markings on the product and the manufacturer's current certification documents.
