PowerBand Belt Part Numbers: Gates, Carlisle and Bando Notation Explained
How banded V-belt part numbers carry band count, section, length reference and construction, and how to keep identical and candidate-equivalent belts apart in a catalog.
A banded (PowerBand-type) V-belt is several belts joined by a tie band, so its catalog record needs the band count in addition to section, length reference and construction. Brand notation differs, so keep the manufacturer’s own number as printed, parse into separate fields, and treat cross-brand matches as candidates, not identical products.
Fields a banded belt record needs
| Field | Why it matters | Comparison across brands |
|---|---|---|
| Band count | Banded belts are separate SKUs from single belts (see the template FAQ) | Needs review: how each brand prints it |
| Section | Profile, for example 5VX in the template | Needs review |
| Length reference and basis | Differs by family; template says use the manufacturer's tables | Needs review |
| Construction | Wrapped, raw-edge or cogged | Brand-specific: Needs review |
| Manufacturer part number | Store as printed, separate from the industry designation | Store both |
Identical versus candidate-equivalent
Identical means the same manufacturer product under two records, which can be merged. A different brand’s belt with the same section and length is at most a candidate, labelled with a relationship type and its evidence. Check length type, section, construction, band count and ties, matched sets, sheave groove, power rating, temperature, oil and static conductivity before any substitution is proposed; never promise automatic substitution.
See the V-belt attribute template for the fields and how to read V-belt part numbers for the parsing model.

FAQ
Should banded belts be separate SKUs from single belts?
Yes. Banded belts, where several belts share a tie band, should be separate SKUs with the band count recorded, because a banded belt and a single belt of the same section are not the same product.
Are two brands' banded belts with the same section and length identical?
Not automatically. Matching notation can make them candidates, but identity or equivalence needs manufacturer evidence covering construction, band count and length basis.
