Roofing shingle product attributes

Roofing shingle attributes to capture: profile, exposure, coverage per bundle, wind class by test method, impact and fire class, and approval expiry dates.

Asphalt shingles are bought by the square but sold by the bundle, and the conversion depends on shingle size and exposure. Supplier titles usually say three bundles per square, yet metric-size and English-size shingles cover different areas per bundle. Without exposure, coverage and bundles per square as numbers, takeoff tools and online calculators produce the wrong order quantity.

Performance ratings come from different test methods that suppliers mix freely. Wind resistance can be reported under a fan-driven test or an uplift-based classification, and warranty wind speeds are a separate commercial term that depends on nailing and accessories. Impact classes, fire classes and SBS modification are often stated on a brochure but missing from the item file.

In high-wind and hurricane-prone regions, the sale also depends on a current product approval number from the state or county. Those approvals carry revision numbers and expiration dates. Recording profile, color, dimensions, coverage, rating classes and approvals per SKU keeps a roofing distributor's quotes defensible when the building department or insurer asks.

The roofing shingles attribute template

18 candidate fields in 4 groups, ordered the way a record gets built: identify the item, capture its specifications, then record fit and the evidence behind any claim. 9 are marked Core: without them the item cannot be identified or filtered. Example values show the expected format only; they do not describe a real SKU.

Identity

Which exact item, variant and pack this record describes.

Check before use: Preserve leading zeros and punctuation, validate against the manufacturer record, and check the GTIN check digit and packaging level before linking.

Technical specifications

Measured or rated values that must travel with their unit and test conditions.

Check before use: Store the number and unit separately. Convert only when the source unit and test conditions are known.

Selection attributes

The type, material and option choices buyers filter and compare on.

Check before use: Map supplier wording to a governed vocabulary only after checking the source text and which variant it applies to.

Evidence & compliance

Listings, standards, classifications and origin claims that need a document behind them.

Check before use: Link the manufacturer document or label with its edition or date. Never copy a certification from a neighboring SKU.

Normalize supplier values

The same value arrives in many spellings. Map each raw string to one governed value, and keep the raw text beside it so a reviewer can see what the supplier actually wrote.

Often missing from supplier files

These fields are commonly absent from price lists and basic feeds, even though the information usually exists in a datasheet, label or installation manual. Treat an empty value as a request for evidence, not as permission to fill it from a similar model.

Questions the record must answer

Buyers and counter-sales reps choosing roofing shingles ask questions like these. Each one needs a specific field, sourced for the exact variant.

  • How many bundles do I need to cover a 30-square roof?
  • Does it meet the high-wind classification our county requires?
  • Is it Class 4 impact rated for the homeowner's insurance paperwork?
  • Does the higher wind warranty require six nails per shingle?

From supplier file to record

  1. Resolve identity first. Link the supplier SKU, manufacturer part number and packaging identifiers without merging distinct variants or pack sizes.
  2. Extract with the source attached. Pull values from rows, tables and datasheets, keeping the raw text, unit and page or row reference.
  3. Map to your classification. Assign the ETIM, ECLASS, UNSPSC or internal class your company licenses, and keep the supplier's original terms.
  4. Review, sync and watch. Hold conflicts and safety-related values for a category expert, write approved values to ERP or PIM, and recheck when the supplier sends a new file.

FAQ

Should the record show ASTM D3161 Class F or ASTM D7158 Class H?

Both, when both are published, in separate fields. ASTM D3161 is a fan-induced wind test with Class F as its highest common rating, while ASTM D7158 uses an uplift-based method with Classes D, G and H. The two are not conversions of each other, and neither equals a warranty wind speed. Store each class with its standard named, and rely on the manufacturer's documentation and local code for which classification a project requires.

Why do code approval numbers need an expiration field?

State and local product approvals, such as a Florida Product Approval, a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance or a Texas Department of Insurance evaluation, are issued for a period and revised over time. An approval that expired last year does not help a permit. Store the approval number, issuing body, revision, scope and expiration date as separate evidence fields, and check the issuing body's current record before quoting the product into a regulated area.

What does SBS modification mean for a shingle record?

SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) is a polymer blended into the asphalt to make the shingle more flexible, which can improve impact performance and cold-weather handling. Many Class 4 impact-rated shingles use it, but not every Class 4 shingle is SBS-modified, and not every SBS shingle carries Class 4. Store asphalt modification as a controlled field and impact class as a separate evidence field so buyers and insurers can filter on each independently.

Isn't coverage per bundle already clear from the product title?

Titles are inconsistent and often round the figure. Coverage per bundle depends on the shingle's dimensions and exposure, and metric-size shingles cover a different area from English-size ones. Takeoff tools need exposure in inches, coverage per bundle in square feet and bundles per square as numbers, stored per SKU. Keep the title for display and treat the numeric fields as the source for any quantity calculation.
