Wheel bearing and hub assembly product attributes
Wheel bearing attributes to capture: bearing generation, hub bolt pattern, spline count, ABS encoder and sensor setup, and axle position for each application.
Wheel bearings cover everything from a pressed-in cartridge bearing to a complete bolt-on hub assembly with an integrated ABS encoder. Suppliers often describe all of them as a wheel bearing, which leaves a buyer unsure whether the part will bolt on or needs a hydraulic press. The generation of the design and the part type are the first facts a record needs to state clearly.
Physical fit then depends on details that application data rarely spells out: stud count and bolt circle, flange bolt count, pilot diameter, spline count and axle position. Drivetrain matters as well, since two-wheel and four-wheel-drive versions of the same truck often take different hubs. When any of these are missing, the part is only as reliable as the fitment table behind it.
ABS configuration is the most common source of wrong parts. A hub may carry a magnetic encoder with no sensor, an integrated sensor with a specific connector and cable length, or no ABS provision at all. Phrases like "with ABS" hide which of these the buyer is getting, so the record needs encoder type, sensor inclusion and connector details as separate structured fields.
The wheel bearings attribute template
18 candidate fields in 5 groups, ordered the way a record gets built: identify the item, capture its specifications, then record fit and the evidence behind any claim. 8 are marked Core: without them the item cannot be identified or filtered. Example values show the expected format only; they do not describe a real SKU.
Identity
Which exact item, variant and pack this record describes.
Check before use: Preserve leading zeros and punctuation, validate against the manufacturer record, and check the GTIN check digit and packaging level before linking.

Check before use: Store the number and unit separately. Convert only when the source unit and test conditions are known.

Check before use: Map supplier wording to a governed vocabulary only after checking the source text and which variant it applies to.

Fit & compatibility
What the item mounts to, mates with, replaces or works alongside.
Check before use: Keep model and series qualifiers. A similar-looking part is not a verified fit until a source says so.

Normalize supplier values
The same value arrives in many spellings. Map each raw string to one governed value, and keep the raw text beside it so a reviewer can see what the supplier actually wrote.

Often missing from supplier files
These fields are commonly absent from price lists and basic feeds, even though the information usually exists in a datasheet, label or installation manual. Treat an empty value as a request for evidence, not as permission to fill it from a similar model.

Questions the record must answer
Buyers and counter-sales reps choosing wheel bearings ask questions like these. Each one needs a specific field, sourced for the exact variant.
- Is this the complete hub assembly, or just the bearing that has to be pressed in?
- Does it come with the ABS sensor, and does the plug match my harness?
- Is this the hub for the 4WD front or the 2WD front?
- What torque does the axle nut go back on at?
From supplier file to record
- Resolve identity first. Link the supplier SKU, manufacturer part number and packaging identifiers without merging distinct variants or pack sizes.
- Extract with the source attached. Pull values from rows, tables and datasheets, keeping the raw text, unit and page or row reference.
- Map to your classification. Assign the ETIM, ECLASS, UNSPSC or internal class your company licenses, and keep the supplier's original terms.
- Review, sync and watch. Hold conflicts and safety-related values for a category expert, write approved values to ERP or PIM, and recheck when the supplier sends a new file.

FAQ
Should cartridge bearings and hub assemblies use the same schema?
They can share one category with a controlled part type and generation field, but each needs its own required attributes. A Gen 1 cartridge bearing is defined by bore, outside diameter and width, much like an industrial bearing. A Gen 2 or Gen 3 hub assembly is defined by flange geometry, stud count and bolt circle, pilot diameter, spline count and ABS setup, and its bore may not apply at all. Make attribute requirements conditional on part type so that records are complete for what they are, rather than filled with placeholders.
Which standards are relevant to wheel bearing data?
Wheel bearings are mostly defined by vehicle manufacturer specifications rather than a single catalog standard. General rolling bearing standards from ISO and ABMA cover boundary dimensions, tolerances and load rating methods for the bearing elements, and some suppliers publish load ratings on that basis. Store any rating together with the method or standard the manufacturer cites. For fitment, the authoritative sources are the manufacturer's application data and OE cross-references, which should be kept as linked records rather than as free text.
Isn't accurate ACES fitment enough for this category?
Fitment tells you which vehicles a part is listed for, but it cannot catch its own errors and does not help when a vehicle is missing or modified. Physical attributes such as stud count, bolt circle, pilot diameter and spline count let you validate that a listed application is plausible, and let a rep confirm a match against the old part in hand. They also allow cross-reference checks between brands. Keep fitment and physical specs as separate, linked data sets so disagreements between them can be flagged for review.
Why does "with ABS" cause so many wrong parts?
The phrase covers several different designs. A hub may include a magnetic encoder ring that works with a separate sensor, a tone ring for an older passive sensor, or a sensor built into the hub with its own cable and connector. Replacing one with another can trigger ABS faults or leave no way to connect the sensor. Model encoder type, sensor included, connector type and cable length as separate fields, sourced from the manufacturer's data, and treat any supplier text that only says "with ABS" as unresolved until it is decoded.
