Socket head cap screw product attributes

Socket head cap screw attribute template: thread size, length, property class or ASTM grade, drive size and dimensional standard, with normalization examples.

Download CSV template JSON Editorial reference

Socket head cap screws are sold in both inch and metric ranges that look nearly identical in a photo, so the record has to carry the thread system explicitly. Supplier files often mix M8-1.25 and 5/16-18 items in one sheet, list length without saying whether it is in millimeters or inches, and leave the dimensional standard implied. Those gaps are how a metric screw ends up in an inch bin.

Strength designations are the second trap. Alloy steel metric screws are usually Property Class 12.9, inch screws are commonly made to ASTM A574, and stainless screws use their own grades. These are not interchangeable labels for one thing, even when the strength levels are similar. Head diameter, head height and drive size also matter for counterbored holes and for choosing the right hex key.

Thread length and grip length decide whether the screw clamps properly or bottoms out. Longer screws are often partially threaded, and the unthreaded shank length varies with the standard. When plated high-strength screws are involved, buyers may also ask about hydrogen embrittlement relief, which is a process record that most supplier files do not include.

The socket head cap screws attribute template

18 candidate fields in 5 groups, ordered the way a record gets built: identify the item, capture its specifications, then record fit and the evidence behind any claim. 9 are marked Core: without them the item cannot be identified or filtered. Example values show the expected format only; they do not describe a real SKU.

Identity

Which exact item, variant and pack this record describes.

Check before use: Preserve leading zeros and punctuation, validate against the manufacturer record, and check the GTIN check digit and packaging level before linking.

Technical specifications

Measured or rated values that must travel with their unit and test conditions.

Check before use: Store the number and unit separately. Convert only when the source unit and test conditions are known.

Selection attributes

The type, material and option choices buyers filter and compare on.

Check before use: Map supplier wording to a governed vocabulary only after checking the source text and which variant it applies to.

Fit & compatibility

What the item mounts to, mates with, replaces or works alongside.

Check before use: Keep model and series qualifiers. A similar-looking part is not a verified fit until a source says so.

Evidence & compliance

Listings, standards, classifications and origin claims that need a document behind them.

Check before use: Link the manufacturer document or label with its edition or date. Never copy a certification from a neighboring SKU.

Normalize supplier values

The same value arrives in many spellings. Map each raw string to one governed value, and keep the raw text beside it so a reviewer can see what the supplier actually wrote.

Often missing from supplier files

These fields are commonly absent from price lists and basic feeds, even though the information usually exists in a datasheet, label or installation manual. Treat an empty value as a request for evidence, not as permission to fill it from a similar model.

Questions the record must answer

Buyers and counter-sales reps choosing socket head cap screws ask questions like these. Each one needs a specific field, sourced for the exact variant.

  • Is this M8 screw fully threaded at 40 mm, or does it have a plain shank?
  • Which hex key size does this head take?
  • Will the head fit a counterbore sized for ISO 4762?
  • Is this 12.9 alloy steel or a stainless screw at a lower strength?

From supplier file to record

  1. Resolve identity first. Link the supplier SKU, manufacturer part number and packaging identifiers without merging distinct variants or pack sizes.
  2. Extract with the source attached. Pull values from rows, tables and datasheets, keeping the raw text, unit and page or row reference.
  3. Map to your classification. Assign the ETIM, ECLASS, UNSPSC or internal class your company licenses, and keep the supplier's original terms.
  4. Review, sync and watch. Hold conflicts and safety-related values for a category expert, write approved values to ERP or PIM, and recheck when the supplier sends a new file.

FAQ

Are Property Class 12.9 and ASTM A574 the same specification?

No. Property Class 12.9 is defined in ISO 898-1 for metric fasteners, and ASTM A574 is a US specification for alloy steel socket head cap screws, available in inch and metric versions. Their strength and hardness ranges are close, but they are separate documents with their own test and marking requirements. Store the specification or property class that the manufacturer states as a controlled value and keep the other as a search synonym, not a substitute. Rely on the manufacturer's documentation for conformance.

Why keep thread length when nominal length is already on the record?

Nominal length is measured from under the head to the end of the screw. Thread length tells a buyer how much of that length is threaded, which matters for clamping through thick parts and for tapped-hole depth. Short screws are often fully threaded, while longer ones have an unthreaded shank whose length depends on the standard and size. Store nominal length, thread length and grip length as separate numeric fields in the same unit, and mark thread length as a reference value when the standard gives it that way.

Should hydrogen embrittlement relief be tracked on plated socket screws?

For high-strength screws that are electroplated, hydrogen embrittlement is a known risk, and some customers require evidence that a baking or relief process was applied. This is lot-level information rather than a fixed product attribute, so it usually sits in certificates or process records. Model it as an evidence field that states whether relief is specified, with a link to the supporting document when a lot is certified. Follow the applicable coating standard and the manufacturer's documentation rather than inferring treatment from the finish name.

Should the record list DIN 912 or ISO 4762?

ISO 4762 is the current international standard for metric socket head cap screws and largely replaced DIN 912, although some dimensions and tolerances differ between the two. Many buyers still search for DIN 912. Store the standard the manufacturer actually states as the governed dimensional standard and keep the other designation as a searchable alias. If a supplier lists both, record both only when the source states conformance to both, rather than treating them as the same document.
