Refrigeration condensing unit product attributes
Product data fields for commercial refrigeration condensing units: refrigerant, application temperature, capacity at a stated rating point, MCA and MOP.
Commercial refrigeration condensing units are usually listed by horsepower, but horsepower does not size a walk-in cooler or freezer. What matters is net capacity at a saturated suction temperature and ambient that match the application, and different manufacturers publish capacity at different rating points. Without those conditions attached, two units that look equivalent on a line card can differ widely in the box.
The refrigerant field has become harder to manage. Many units are approved for several blends with different capacities for each, older R-404A equipment is being replaced with lower-GWP options, and A2L refrigerants bring their own installation requirements. A record needs the approved refrigerant list and the safety classification as separate values, both traced to current manufacturer literature.
Electrical and connection data decide whether the install goes smoothly. Minimum circuit ampacity and maximum overcurrent protection drive wire and breaker sizing, suction and liquid connection sizes decide whether the existing piping mates, and the maximum ambient rating tells a contractor whether a rooftop location in a hot climate is realistic.
The condensing units attribute template
18 candidate fields in 5 groups, ordered the way a record gets built: identify the item, capture its specifications, then record fit and the evidence behind any claim. 9 are marked Core: without them the item cannot be identified or filtered. Example values show the expected format only; they do not describe a real SKU.
Identity
Which exact item, variant and pack this record describes.
Check before use: Preserve leading zeros and punctuation, validate against the manufacturer record, and check the GTIN check digit and packaging level before linking.

Technical specifications
Measured or rated values that must travel with their unit and test conditions.
Check before use: Store the number and unit separately. Convert only when the source unit and test conditions are known.

Selection attributes
The type, material and option choices buyers filter and compare on.
Check before use: Map supplier wording to a governed vocabulary only after checking the source text and which variant it applies to.
| Attribute | Type | Priority | Example format |

Fit & compatibility
What the item mounts to, mates with, replaces or works alongside.
Check before use: Keep model and series qualifiers. A similar-looking part is not a verified fit until a source says so.

Evidence & compliance
Listings, standards, classifications and origin claims that need a document behind them.
Check before use: Link the manufacturer document or label with its edition or date. Never copy a certification from a neighboring SKU.

Normalize supplier values
The same value arrives in many spellings. Map each raw string to one governed value, and keep the raw text beside it so a reviewer can see what the supplier actually wrote.

Often missing from supplier files
These fields are commonly absent from price lists and basic feeds, even though the information usually exists in a datasheet, label or installation manual. Treat an empty value as a request for evidence, not as permission to fill it from a similar model.
- Application temperature range as a governed value
- AWEF (Annual Walk-in Energy Factor)
- Refrigerant safety group (A1 / A2L)
- Maximum ambient operating temperature
- Capacity rating conditions (SST and ambient)
Questions the record must answer
Buyers and counter-sales reps choosing condensing units ask questions like these. Each one needs a specific field, sourced for the exact variant.
- Will this unit hold a walk-in cooler at 35 °F when it sits on a roof that hits 110 °F?
- Is it approved for R-448A, or only for R-404A?
- What breaker and wire size does it need on 208 V three-phase?
- Will the suction and liquid connections match the lines already run to the box?
From supplier file to record
- Resolve identity first. Link the supplier SKU, manufacturer part number and packaging identifiers without merging distinct variants or pack sizes.
- Extract with the source attached. Pull values from rows, tables and datasheets, keeping the raw text, unit and page or row reference.
- Map to your classification. Assign the ETIM, ECLASS, UNSPSC or internal class your company licenses, and keep the supplier's original terms.
- Review, sync and watch. Hold conflicts and safety-related values for a category expert, write approved values to ERP or PIM, and recheck when the supplier sends a new file.

FAQ
Why is nominal horsepower not enough to size a condensing unit?
Horsepower describes the compressor motor, not the refrigeration effect. Delivered capacity changes with saturated suction temperature, ambient temperature and refrigerant, so the same 7.5 HP unit can deliver far less on a freezer than on a cooler. Store horsepower as a descriptive number, and store capacity as a value tied to its rating conditions, ideally one row per refrigerant and rating point, so an estimator can compare units at the conditions of the actual job.
Which condensing unit records need an AWEF value?
AWEF is the federal efficiency metric for walk-in cooler and freezer refrigeration systems, including dedicated condensing units intended for walk-ins. Units sold for other applications, such as reach-in or process refrigeration, may not be covered. Make the field conditionally required based on the unit's intended application, record the value exactly as the manufacturer certified it, and rely on the manufacturer's documentation and the DOE compliance database rather than deriving it from capacity and power figures.
How should condensing unit records handle the move to A2L refrigerants?
Keep refrigerant and refrigerant safety group as two separate controlled fields, and allow a list of approved refrigerants where the manufacturer permits more than one. A2L refrigerants come with installation requirements that differ from A1 blends, so a unit is not interchangeable just because the capacity matches. Link each approved refrigerant to the source document that states it, and flag records where the refrigerant was inferred from a model suffix rather than read from current literature.
Why don't capacity figures from different suppliers line up?
Manufacturers publish capacity at different saturated suction temperatures, ambient temperatures and return gas or subcooling assumptions, and some quote gross compressor capacity while others quote net unit capacity. Two numbers can only be compared when those conditions match. Store the rating conditions as part of the capacity value, normalize units to Btu/h, and avoid a single sortable capacity column that mixes values measured under different conditions.
