Butterfly valve product attributes

Product data fields for butterfly valves: size, wafer or lug body, seat and disc materials, cold working pressure, and ISO 5211 actuator mounting pad.

Download CSV template JSON Editorial reference

A butterfly valve record has to answer two separate questions: will the valve fit the piping, and will it survive the service. Fit depends on size, body style (wafer, lug or double flanged) and the flange drilling it is made to match. Service depends on the seat, disc and stem materials, the pressure rating and the temperature range, which is often limited by the elastomer seat rather than the metal body.

Pressure data is where supplier files are least consistent. Resilient-seated valves are commonly rated by cold working pressure and described as compatible with a flange class, while high-performance valves carry a true ASME pressure class. Lug valves may have a lower rating when used for dead-end service with one side unbolted. These values often sit in footnotes on the data sheet rather than in the price file.

A buyer replacing or automating a valve also needs the top flange details: the ISO 5211 mounting pad and stem connection decide which actuator or gear operator bolts on. Without them, a valve that fits the pipe may still need an adapter kit to fit the actuator already on site.

The butterfly valves attribute template

18 candidate fields in 5 groups, ordered the way a record gets built: identify the item, capture its specifications, then record fit and the evidence behind any claim. 11 are marked Core: without them the item cannot be identified or filtered. Example values show the expected format only; they do not describe a real SKU.

Identity

Which exact item, variant and pack this record describes.

Check before use: Preserve leading zeros and punctuation, validate against the manufacturer record, and check the GTIN check digit and packaging level before linking.

Attribute Type Priority Example format

Technical specifications

Measured or rated values that must travel with their unit and test conditions.

Check before use: Store the number and unit separately. Convert only when the source unit and test conditions are known.

Selection attributes

The type, material and option choices buyers filter and compare on.

Check before use: Map supplier wording to a governed vocabulary only after checking the source text and which variant it applies to.

Fit & compatibility

What the item mounts to, mates with, replaces or works alongside.

Check before use: Keep model and series qualifiers. A similar-looking part is not a verified fit until a source says so.

Evidence & compliance

Listings, standards, classifications and origin claims that need a document behind them.

Check before use: Link the manufacturer document or label with its edition or date. Never copy a certification from a neighboring SKU.

Normalize supplier values

The same value arrives in many spellings. Map each raw string to one governed value, and keep the raw text beside it so a reviewer can see what the supplier actually wrote.

Often missing from supplier files

These fields are commonly absent from price lists and basic feeds, even though the information usually exists in a datasheet, label or installation manual. Treat an empty value as a request for evidence, not as permission to fill it from a similar model.

Questions the record must answer

Buyers and counter-sales reps choosing butterfly valves ask questions like these. Each one needs a specific field, sourced for the exact variant.

  • Will this lug valve bolt between my Class 150 flanges?
  • Can I mount my existing actuator on this valve without an adapter?
  • What pressure can it hold at the end of a line with the downstream pipe removed?
  • Is the seat rated for hot water at 200 °F?

From supplier file to record

  1. Resolve identity first. Link the supplier SKU, manufacturer part number and packaging identifiers without merging distinct variants or pack sizes.
  2. Extract with the source attached. Pull values from rows, tables and datasheets, keeping the raw text, unit and page or row reference.
  3. Map to your classification. Assign the ETIM, ECLASS, UNSPSC or internal class your company licenses, and keep the supplier's original terms.
  4. Review, sync and watch. Hold conflicts and safety-related values for a category expert, write approved values to ERP or PIM, and recheck when the supplier sends a new file.

FAQ

How should API 609 Category A and Category B be recorded?

Store the API 609 category as a controlled field only when the manufacturer declares it. Category A generally covers concentric, resilient-seated valves rated by cold working pressure, and Category B covers offset-disc, high-performance valves with ASME class pressure-temperature ratings. The category also implies different face-to-face dimensions, so do not derive it from the disc design alone. Link the value to the manufacturer's data sheet or declaration.

Why is a lug valve rated lower for dead-end service?

In dead-end service one side of the valve has no downstream flange, so the seat and body are loaded only through the lug bolts on the pressurized side. Many manufacturers publish a reduced pressure rating for that case, sometimes with conditions such as a required downstream flange for full rating. Store dead-end pressure as its own numeric field with a unit, separate from the full cold working pressure.

Which standards and certifications belong on a butterfly valve record?

Typical entries include the design standard (such as API 609 or MSS SP-67), the test standard used for seat and shell testing, the flange standard the valve is drilled to, and drinking-water certification such as NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372 where it applies. Store each as a separate evidence value with its source document. Do not treat a mating flange standard as proof of a pressure rating.

Does the seat or the disc decide chemical compatibility?

Both are wetted, so both matter, but in resilient-seated valves the elastomer seat is usually the limiting part for chemical resistance and temperature. Store seat, disc and stem materials as three separate controlled fields, each normalized to a recognized material name. A compatibility check should read all wetted materials together, using the manufacturer's current compatibility guidance rather than a generic chart.
