Pipeline strainer product attributes
Product data fields for pipeline strainers: body type and size, end connection and pressure class, screen opening and material, and replacement screen.
Strainer records usually combine two products: the body and the screen inside it. The body is described by type (Y, basket, duplex), size, end connection, pressure class and material. The screen is described by opening size, perforation or mesh, material and open area. Supplier files often list only the default screen, so the record says nothing about the alternatives that fit the same body.
Screen opening is the most error-prone value. Perforated plate is sized by hole diameter, woven mesh by wires per inch, and some suppliers add a micron equivalent. A bare "20" in a feed could be a mesh count or part of a code. End connections are written in many ways, and threaded, socket weld and flanged versions of the same size carry different pressure-temperature limits.
A buyer needs the size and connection that fit the line, a pressure-temperature rating that covers the service, a screen opening that protects the downstream equipment, and wetted materials suited to the fluid. For maintenance, the replacement screen part number and the blowdown connection size are as useful as the body data.
The strainers attribute template
18 candidate fields in 5 groups, ordered the way a record gets built: identify the item, capture its specifications, then record fit and the evidence behind any claim. 9 are marked Core: without them the item cannot be identified or filtered. Example values show the expected format only; they do not describe a real SKU.
Identity
Which exact item, variant and pack this record describes.
Check before use: Preserve leading zeros and punctuation, validate against the manufacturer record, and check the GTIN check digit and packaging level before linking.

Technical specifications
Measured or rated values that must travel with their unit and test conditions.
Check before use: Store the number and unit separately. Convert only when the source unit and test conditions are known.

Check before use: Map supplier wording to a governed vocabulary only after checking the source text and which variant it applies to.

Fit & compatibility
What the item mounts to, mates with, replaces or works alongside.
Check before use: Keep model and series qualifiers. A similar-looking part is not a verified fit until a source says so.

Listings, standards, classifications and origin claims that need a document behind them.
Check before use: Link the manufacturer document or label with its edition or date. Never copy a certification from a neighboring SKU.

Normalize supplier values
The same value arrives in many spellings. Map each raw string to one governed value, and keep the raw text beside it so a reviewer can see what the supplier actually wrote.

Often missing from supplier files
These fields are commonly absent from price lists and basic feeds, even though the information usually exists in a datasheet, label or installation manual. Treat an empty value as a request for evidence, not as permission to fill it from a similar model.

Questions the record must answer
Buyers and counter-sales reps choosing strainers ask questions like these. Each one needs a specific field, sourced for the exact variant.
- Which replacement screen fits this strainer, and what opening sizes are available?
- Is this strainer rated for steam at our operating pressure?
- Will it catch particles down to the size our pump or meter requires?
- Does it have a tapped blowdown connection, and what size?
From supplier file to record
- Resolve identity first. Link the supplier SKU, manufacturer part number and packaging identifiers without merging distinct variants or pack sizes.
- Extract with the source attached. Pull values from rows, tables and datasheets, keeping the raw text, unit and page or row reference.
- Map to your classification. Assign the ETIM, ECLASS, UNSPSC or internal class your company licenses, and keep the supplier's original terms.
- Review, sync and watch. Hold conflicts and safety-related values for a category expert, write approved values to ERP or PIM, and recheck when the supplier sends a new file.

FAQ
Is a mesh size the same as a micron rating?
No. Mesh is a count of wires per linear inch, and the actual opening depends on wire diameter, so two 40 mesh screens can have different openings. A micron value is an approximate particle size the opening stops. Store screen construction (perforated or mesh), mesh count or hole size, and micron equivalent as separate fields, and take the micron value from the manufacturer rather than converting it with a generic table.
What is open area ratio, and why does it belong in the schema?
Open area ratio compares the total open area of the screen with the cross-sectional area of the pipe. A higher ratio means the strainer can collect more debris before pressure drop becomes a problem, which affects cleaning intervals. Store it as a plain number, such as 3.0 for a 3:1 ratio, taken from the manufacturer's data. It helps buyers compare Y and basket strainers of the same size.
Why do flanged end connections appear in so many spellings?
Suppliers abbreviate flange class, facing and standard differently: 150#, Class 150, ANSI 150 and 150 LB RF can all describe the same end. Normalize to a governed value that names the flange standard, class and facing separately, and keep the raw string for traceability. Do not merge different facings or classes, such as a 125 flat-face cast iron flange with a 150 raised-face steel flange.
Should replacement screens be separate records?
Yes, when they are sold separately. Each screen option becomes its own item with a part number, opening size, construction and material, linked to the strainer bodies it fits. The strainer record then points to its default screen and lists compatible alternatives. That lets maintenance buyers reorder the right screen and lets engineers change the opening size without replacing the body.
