Dental handpiece product attributes
Dental handpiece attributes for catalog records: handpiece type, coupling or hose connection, bur shank, free-running speed, gear ratio and reprocessing.
Dental handpiece records fail most often on compatibility. A high-speed turbine connects to the delivery unit through a hose connection, frequently via a manufacturer-specific quick coupler, and a low-speed attachment mounts to a motor through its own interface. Supplier files tend to list "4-hole" or a coupler brand without saying which side of the connection it describes, which is exactly what a practice needs to know before ordering.
Performance values are scattered and written inconsistently. Speed appears as rpm, min-1 or "400K", gear ratios are shown by colored bands, and power output, air pressure and head size sit in instruction manuals rather than price files. Reprocessing limits, the sterilization temperature and validated cycles, come from the manufacturer's instructions and differ between otherwise similar models.
A buyer needs the handpiece type, the coupling or hose connection it requires, the bur shank it accepts, speed or gear ratio, head size and lighting. Each of those, plus device identifiers and the manufacturer's reprocessing instructions, should be stored as separate fields with a traceable source.
The dental handpieces attribute template
18 candidate fields in 5 groups, ordered the way a record gets built: identify the item, capture its specifications, then record fit and the evidence behind any claim. 7 are marked Core: without them the item cannot be identified or filtered. Example values show the expected format only; they do not describe a real SKU.
Identity
Which exact item, variant and pack this record describes.
Check before use: Preserve leading zeros and punctuation, validate against the manufacturer record, and check the GTIN check digit and packaging level before linking.

Technical specifications
Measured or rated values that must travel with their unit and test conditions.
Check before use: Store the number and unit separately. Convert only when the source unit and test conditions are known.

Selection attributes
The type, material and option choices buyers filter and compare on.
Check before use: Map supplier wording to a governed vocabulary only after checking the source text and which variant it applies to.

Fit & compatibility
What the item mounts to, mates with, replaces or works alongside.
Check before use: Keep model and series qualifiers. A similar-looking part is not a verified fit until a source says so.

Evidence & compliance
Listings, standards, classifications and origin claims that need a document behind them.
Check before use: Link the manufacturer document or label with its edition or date. Never copy a certification from a neighboring SKU.

Normalize supplier values
The same value arrives in many spellings. Map each raw string to one governed value, and keep the raw text beside it so a reviewer can see what the supplier actually wrote.

Often missing from supplier files
These fields are commonly absent from price lists and basic feeds, even though the information usually exists in a datasheet, label or installation manual. Treat an empty value as a request for evidence, not as permission to fill it from a similar model.

Questions the record must answer
Buyers and counter-sales reps choosing dental handpieces ask questions like these. Each one needs a specific field, sourced for the exact variant.
- Will this high-speed handpiece fit the couplers already on our operatories?
- Does this contra-angle take friction grip or latch-type burs?
- Is there a mini-head version for pediatric or posterior access?
- Can this handpiece go through our autoclave at 134 °C, and for how many cycles?
From supplier file to record
- Resolve identity first. Link the supplier SKU, manufacturer part number and packaging identifiers without merging distinct variants or pack sizes.
- Extract with the source attached. Pull values from rows, tables and datasheets, keeping the raw text, unit and page or row reference.
- Map to your classification. Assign the ETIM, ECLASS, UNSPSC or internal class your company licenses, and keep the supplier's original terms.
- Review, sync and watch. Hold conflicts and safety-related values for a category expert, write approved values to ERP or PIM, and recheck when the supplier sends a new file.

FAQ
Is the coupler type the same as the hose hole count?
No. The hole count (for example 2-hole or 4-hole) describes the hose connection on the dental unit. Many high-speed handpieces attach through a quick coupler that screws onto that hose, and the coupler interface is often specific to a manufacturer or product line. Model the hose connection and the handpiece coupling as two fields, and express compatibility as a relationship between handpiece, coupler and hose connection, taken from the manufacturer's compatibility documentation rather than inferred from the part name.
Which standards are commonly referenced for dental handpieces?
Documentation for dental handpieces commonly references ISO 14457 for handpieces and motors, ISO 1797 for bur shank dimensions, ISO 9168 for hose connectors, and ISO 17664-1 (formerly ISO 17664) for the information manufacturers provide on reprocessing. Store only the standards the manufacturer actually declares for that product, with edition years, as structured evidence. Do not add a standard to a record because it usually applies to the category. Regulatory status in each market should come from the manufacturer's current documentation.
Why record both free-running speed and power output?
Free-running speed is measured with no load and says little about cutting under pressure. Power output reflects how well the handpiece holds speed when working, and two turbines with the same maximum speed can differ noticeably in power. Store both as numbers with units (rpm and W), along with the recommended drive air pressure, because published values depend on the pressure used. Take all three from the manufacturer's specifications so the figures are measured under the same stated conditions.
What identifiers should a US dental handpiece record carry?
At minimum: the manufacturer's part number, the device identifier (UDI-DI) for each package level as listed in the FDA's GUDID database, and the FDA product code and classification regulation for the device. If the device reached the market through a 510(k), store the submission number as evidence. Keep these as separate identifier fields rather than notes, and source the regulatory values from the manufacturer or FDA's public databases, not from a reseller's listing.
