Surgical instrument product attributes

Surgical instrument attributes for catalog records: pattern name, instrument type, overall length, jaw or tip design, curvature and steel grade.

Download CSV template JSON Editorial reference

Surgical instruments are identified by pattern before anything else. A Mayo-Hegar needle holder and a Crile-Wood needle holder can share a length and finish but differ in jaw shape and handling, and surgeons ask for patterns by name. Supplier files spell those eponymous names in many ways, and a missing hyphen or reversed order is enough to split one instrument into duplicate records.

Dimensions and features follow. Lengths are given in inches or centimetres, jaws can be straight or curved, serrated or smooth, and options such as tungsten carbide inserts or razor-edge blades are often signalled only by handle color. Grade terms like OR grade and floor grade are not standardized, and reprocessing instructions live in separate documents that the catalog rarely links.

A buyer needs the pattern, instrument type, length, tip or jaw design, curvature and material, plus clear reusable or single-use status and whether it ships sterile. Each of these should be a controlled or numeric field, with regulatory and reprocessing information taken from the manufacturer's documentation.

The surgical instruments attribute template

18 candidate fields in 4 groups, ordered the way a record gets built: identify the item, capture its specifications, then record fit and the evidence behind any claim. 12 are marked Core: without them the item cannot be identified or filtered. Example values show the expected format only; they do not describe a real SKU.

Identity

Which exact item, variant and pack this record describes.

Check before use: Preserve leading zeros and punctuation, validate against the manufacturer record, and check the GTIN check digit and packaging level before linking.

Attribute Type Priority Example format
Manufacturer Catalog Number (MPN) manufacturer_catalog_number_mpn Identifier Core NH-1560-TC
GTIN-14 gtin_14 Identifier Core 10841234615601

Technical specifications

Measured or rated values that must travel with their unit and test conditions.

Check before use: Store the number and unit separately. Convert only when the source unit and test conditions are known.

Overall Length overall_length Number · mm Core 152
Jaw / Tip Width jaw_tip_width Number · mm Core 1.5

Selection attributes

The type, material and option choices buyers filter and compare on.

Check before use: Map supplier wording to a governed vocabulary only after checking the source text and which variant it applies to.

Evidence & compliance

Listings, standards, classifications and origin claims that need a document behind them.

Check before use: Link the manufacturer document or label with its edition or date. Never copy a certification from a neighboring SKU.

Normalize supplier values

The same value arrives in many spellings. Map each raw string to one governed value, and keep the raw text beside it so a reviewer can see what the supplier actually wrote.

Often missing from supplier files

These fields are commonly absent from price lists and basic feeds, even though the information usually exists in a datasheet, label or installation manual. Treat an empty value as a request for evidence, not as permission to fill it from a similar model.

Questions the record must answer

Buyers and counter-sales reps choosing surgical instruments ask questions like these. Each one needs a specific field, sourced for the exact variant.

  • Do you have this needle holder in a 7-inch length with tungsten carbide jaws?
  • Is this the curved or straight version of the pattern?
  • Is this a reusable OR-grade instrument or single-use?
  • What sterilization cycle does the manufacturer specify for this instrument?

From supplier file to record

  1. Resolve identity first. Link the supplier SKU, manufacturer part number and packaging identifiers without merging distinct variants or pack sizes.
  2. Extract with the source attached. Pull values from rows, tables and datasheets, keeping the raw text, unit and page or row reference.
  3. Map to your classification. Assign the ETIM, ECLASS, UNSPSC or internal class your company licenses, and keep the supplier's original terms.
  4. Review, sync and watch. Hold conflicts and safety-related values for a category expert, write approved values to ERP or PIM, and recheck when the supplier sends a new file.

FAQ

Why treat the pattern name as the main attribute?

Because clinicians select instruments by pattern, and the pattern defines the design: jaw shape, proportions and intended use. Length and curvature then distinguish variants within the pattern. Store the pattern as a controlled value from a governed list with a single canonical spelling, and keep supplier spellings as aliases for search. Combining pattern, type and length in free text makes it impossible to find every size of one pattern or to catch duplicates.

Do surgical instruments require a 510(k)?

It depends on the device. In the US, many manual surgical instruments for general use fall under a Class I classification that is exempt from premarket notification, while other instruments are classified differently. Store the classification regulation, device class and any submission number as evidence fields, and take them from the manufacturer's documentation or FDA's classification database. Do not apply one status to the whole category, and do not describe an exempt or cleared device as FDA approved.

Should instrument length be stored in inches or millimetres?

Store one canonical numeric value, typically millimetres, and generate the other unit for display. Many instruments are made to metric dimensions and labeled in both systems, and supplier files round conversions inconsistently, for example 5-1/2 in (139.7 mm) shown as 14 cm on one sheet and 13.97 cm on another. A single governed value with a conversion rule keeps the size run consistent and makes duplicates easier to spot.

What do gold and black handles usually indicate?

By common industry convention, gold-colored ring handles indicate tungsten carbide inserts in the jaws or blades, and black handles often indicate a razor-edge or supercut scissor blade. These are conventions rather than standards, and not every manufacturer follows them. Store the underlying feature, such as tungsten carbide inserts: yes, or blade edge type, as its own field from the manufacturer's specification, and treat handle color as a descriptive attribute only.
