About HS codes

What is an HS code?

The Harmonized System (HS) is the World Customs Organization's product nomenclature, used by more than 200 countries. Its 6-digit code is the same everywhere: the first two digits are the chapter, the first four the heading and all six the subheading.

Which HS version does this tool use?

HS 2022, the edition in force since 1 January 2022. Labels come straight from the nomenclature, not from the model.

What's the difference between HS, CN, TARIC and HTS codes?

Countries extend the 6-digit HS code for their own tariffs: the EU's Combined Nomenclature (CN) uses 8 digits and TARIC 10, and the US HTS uses 10. The first six digits are always the HS code this tool returns.

Can I use the result on a customs declaration?

Use it as a starting point. The declarant is responsible for the classification. For legal certainty in the EU, apply for a Binding Tariff Information (BTI) decision from customs.

How do I get a more accurate answer?

Say what the product is made of, what it does and how it's used. A part number alone works for well-known parts, but a short description of the item is more reliable. If the tool needs more, it tells you what to add.
